Software Automation in IT Processes (Part One)

There are many definitions of software automation and many promises of significant savings in time, effort, and money, but practically speaking, what is the best definition, and what is the true scope of the benefits, in addition to the challenges that implementation can entail?

Perhaps many of you have searched online and on YouTube for how to automate, for automation tools, and most likely for free automation tools, and maybe you found things like: “Automate your processes in 3 easy steps!” or the success story of the largest company in the sector. But let’s be honest, you’ll find a wide range of approaches, from something very simple to implement, to a massive and slow process. Furthermore, you’ll discover the great advantages that automation can offer. However, I wonder: Why aren’t the companies that have implemented automation processes so successfully the leading players in the global market? Or why haven’t these same companies devoured their competitors? Automation alone is no guarantee of an organization’s success. It’s like taking a football team and fielding its best forwards, but with a weak midfield and defense; it certainly won’t be the most successful team despite having the best attack.

To understand software automation and its importance in today’s evolving business environment, we must review its history and understand the origins of this revolution.

Software automation is part of what’s called Industry 4.0. Many of you may have heard this term, perhaps because it’s trendy or because the media mentions it, but I don’t know if everyone knows where the name comes from. To better illustrate the origin of the name Industry 4.0, I present the following timeline, which will take us back to our history classes in school. This should give you a better idea of its origin, and in our next post, we’ll continue exploring the evolution of this topic.
